It’s almost dahlia planting season!! Here’s ho It’s almost dahlia planting season!! Here’s how I take cuttings from my most special tubers to increase stock early in the season! Taking cuttings = free plants 🙌

1. About 4-6 weeks before your last frost start “waking up” the tubers you want to take cuttings from by bringing them into a warmer space than what they were being store at. I bring mine in from about 45-50° to 70-75° in order to wake them.

2. Pot up those special tubers vertically leaving the neck and crown part above the soil level. The crown is where the eyes/future stems grow from!

3. Put them under grow lights and keep the room temperature around 70-75°, I don’t water tubers until I see green growth.

4. Wait (and check on them 78726894 times a day if you’re like me) while the eyes turn into stems with leaves and get super excited because it’s time to cut!

5. This should take about 3-4ish weeks under the grow lights, when the stems have 2-3 sets of leaves take a sharp, sterilized knife and cut the stem from the tuber as close as possible to the crown from which its growing from.

6. Remove the bottom set of leaves gently from the stem so you have about two inches bare.

7. Dip in some rooting hormone and pop the stem into a new 4” pot filled with nutrient-rich potting soil. You want to make sure it’s down under the soil surface about 1”. Pat down gently around the base to make sure the cutting is in there securely.

8. Water them in well and put the pots back under the grow lights in a warm area. Check on them daily, once they root they’ll need lots of water!

9. Plant tubers and cuttings outside once all danger of frost has passed. I take about 3-4 cutting per tuber per season and still plant them outside afterwards and STILL get beautiful, lush dahlia plants!

He would have been 3 today 💛 Shared a few inti He would have been 3 today 💛

Shared a few intimate and pure moments in stories to show what it looks like to parent after loss, he’s not here physically but still very much a part of our family. I will say, the capacity for love and compassion our living kids have (at just 2 and 5 years old) really blows me away 🥹 Parenting after loss is a whole whirlwind of confusing, conflicting emotions. Am I doing enough to honor my baby? Am I doing too much? Am I grieving too much and therefore not paying enough attention to my living kids? Is the random mom rage grief or overstimulation or something else?? I’m so proud of the compassion, love and empathy my kids show and I’m sad they know it at such young ages. It’s confusing. It’s unfair. It’s hard. There are no rules, and there’s definitely no baby loss handbook. The days and anniversaries associated with baby loss can be overwhelming and confusing too. Sometimes I feel like keeping it simple and keeping it completely private, other times I feel like publicly honoring our baby. If there’s one thing I’ve learned on this journey it’s that there truly are no rules in grief. You just do what feels right in that given moment. We miss you always baby Liam 💗

That about sums it up! Why I garden, in a nutshell. Gardening has been a passion of mine for many years and became something that I dove even deeper into after experiencing the devastating loss of our baby and the grief journey that has followed. I feel calm and at home and wild and free in the garden, yet planned and poised and in control. In short, gardening changed my life, and saved my life – it has given me profound peace and purpose and there’s nowhere I’d rather be than with my hands in the dirt, head in the sun and heart in nature 🌿

To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow 💐🌿🌷 One of my all time favorite gardening quotes, to plant a garden truly is to have hope for the future. Even looking forward to the tiniest things like watching a seed sprout or waiting for a bud to bloom. It’s the little things, and gardening does that for me, especially when hope and talking about the future can feel hard.

So this your sign to grow all the things this year! I have many blog posts on my site that can help and if you’re local to NY I’m teaching a gardening course later this month, more info on my farm page @wildirisflowertruck 🌿

Sephora Spring Savings Event Sale Picks

April 27, 2020 / Beauty & Style

This post may contain affiliate links.

The Sephora Spring Savings Event Sale is here! Don't miss out on picking up all my favorites! New to Sephora, learn what to grab now!

Sephora Spring Savings Event Picks

The Spring Sephora Savings Event has arrived! Here’s the scoop: The sale rolls out in stages – Rouge members can start saving 20% starting 4/17-5/1, VIB members can save 15% 4/21-4/29, and Beauty Insiders can save 10% starting 4/23-4/27.

Discount is applied at checkout using code : SPRINGSAVE

When it comes to my strategy for shopping the sale, I have two approaches. I like to use it as a time to stock up on my tried & true products and a time to try a few new things I’ve had my eye on for a discounted price. The pages on pages of endless items can be overwhelming, so I wanted to break it down and share my picks here. This is a super comprehensive list, broken down by category, of all of my favorite products (and a few new items I plan on trying)! xx

SKINCARE

Drunk Elephant

If you’ve been following me for any amount of time you know Drunk Elephant is my jam! And yes, the hype is REAL. These are the products I use everyday, they make up most of my skincare routine as you can see haha. A new favorite of mine recently has been the Umbra Tint Daily Sunscreen, its like a sheer tinted moisturizer, primer and sunscreen in one! My tried and true holy grail DE product is their Virgin Marula Oil, it’s my top pick of the sale. And of course I’m excited to try some of their new products like the detangler, deodorant and shower soap! If you’ve never tried DE before and want a sampling that’s also a FANTASTIC value for you money, try their The Littles kit!

Biossance

You literally can’t go wrong with anything Biossance! It’s another favorite skincare brand of mine, like DE they are 100% clean so you can feel good about what you’re putting on your skin! I have been using their Squalane Vitamin C Rose Oil and the Squalane Phyto-Retinol Serum (a retinol-alternative that WORKS) for a year now and they have become definite staples of my routine!

If it’s you first time trying I highly recommend checking out one of their value kits!

Farmacy

Another clean brand I love! I’ve been using their cleansing balm at night and it literally melts the make up off my face plus it’s superrrr hydrating which I love. The Honeymoon Glow Night Serum and Honey Potion Mask have been staples of my routine for years, when you find something that works stick with it right!? The newest product I’ve been loving by Farmacy is their Cheer Up Vitamin C eye cream, it’s super smooth and hydrating – wakes my eyes right up in the morning and quenches the dryness from the night! Try this kit for just $45, you get four Farmacy products in travel size!

Other Favorites

Ok so I am super intrigued by this new (to me) brand THE ORDINARY – reviews are insane on their products and the best part? Everything is like under $10!! Has anyone tried any of these yet? I’m ordering the hyaluronic acid and their toner and I’m so pumped to test them out! Also this Summer Fridays cream/mask is BOMB – it’s very thick so I apply it just before bed to really let the moisture soak in overnight, this Mario Badescu Drying Lotion gets rid of blemishes overnight and this Caudalie exfoliating cleanser is super creamy and gentle, I’ve been using it for years! L’Occitane makes my all time favorite hand cream so I’m liking it here as well!

Sun Protection

Supergoop has been my absolute holy grail brand for sun protection for years, I don’t stray it’s that good!

Sunless Tanning

I’ve been loving the spray form of Isle of Paradise recently, have you tried it yet?? Much easier than the drops in my opinion! These other brands are great too!

Deodorant & Perfume

I’m currently using the Briogeo deodorant and love it but wanted to give DE a try as well! Viktor and Rolf Flower Bomb has been my scent for years now, it’s soft and floraly and I just haven’t found anything that compares!

Masks

A selection of my favorite masks – hydrating, detoxing and more!

Skincare Tools

I swear by the GloPro micro needling tool, if you use it religiously (I try for once a week) it makes a HUGE difference in your skin tone and texture!

MAKE-UP

Face

These are my current make up favorites!

Eyes

The Tarte In Bloom pallet is by far the best value with the best colors out there! I’ve been using it religiously for almost a year and it’s still in great shape!

Lips

Just want to shout out the Laneige lip mask, I use this every night and I’m addicted, and the Tarte Lip Quench are honestly the BEST if you’re looking for hydration with a hint of color! I use them almost like a balm they’re so moisturizing, I’m for sure picking up a few more colors during the sale!

Clean Brand: ILIA

Super excited to try these ILIA products! I plan on purchasing a few during the sale because they’re clean and I’ve heard so many good things from friends!

TARTE Favorites

I LOVE Tarte, their products are amazing and they offer such a wide variety for everyone! Also, as a blogger working with them I have to say I’ve met some of the nicest, most genuine people on their team, you gotta love that!

Charlotte Tilbury Favorites

Obsessed with CT recently, especially the setting powder (it beats Laura Mercier for me!) and the contour wand!

Make-up Application

My tried and true brushes and sponges, these have lasted me years and are still going strong! One thing I do religiously is clean them, I love this cleaning pad from Amazon!

HAIR

Shampoo / Conditioner / Detanglers / Dry Shampoos

Hair Masks

Tools

WHAT’S IN MY CART?

Ok so after all that what am I purchasing?? Here you go – trying new things and stocking up on go-to’s! (If I’m not purchasing one of my tried and true items it’s because I’m all stocked up already!)
