Unlocking the secret to dahlia dividing? Get your Unlocking the secret to dahlia dividing?

Get yourself a reliable, SHARP knife! 🌸🔪 #MyVictorinox #partner It makes dividing way less stressful and so much faster 🙌 That was my biggest mistake as a amateur farmer!

If you’re in the market look no further than the @Victorinoxnorthamerica Huntsman Swiss Army knife – this versatile tool makes dividing tubers (and so much more!) a breeze. Compact yet powerful, with 15 different functions, it’s the ultimate companion for any gardening enthusiast. It’s my go-to flower farm tool, always in my pocket for whatever unexpected farm (or #momlife) issues come up!

Back to dahlias, here’s a few more tips for dividing —

🌸 Use a SHARP knife — I recommend the Victorinox Huntsman Swiss Army Knife for its versatility, precision and sharpness

🌸 Use the saw tool on your Huntsman for the thicker cuts, and the scissors for cutting off the stringy roots before dividing

🌸 Sterilize your tools in between varieties as you’re dividing to lessen the spread of viruses

🌸 You can either divide in the fall before storage or in the late winter/spring just before planting

🌸 Look for eyes on the crown (they’re circled in the video), a viable tuber will have a piece of the crown attached to its neck; toss any tubers that have broken necks

🌸 Storage is different for everyone and greatly depends on your specific situation, for us what works best is storing washed, cured clumps and divided tubers in vermiculite in airtight bins that we keep in our garage for the winter (you want a cool, dark space, ideally kept at 90% humidity and around 40°)

Let me know in the comments if you have any other questions!

Happy gardening! 🌻

Here are my thoughts —

✨I prefer the fork over a shovel, lifts the clumps more gently and easier to get underneath

✨Lopping down the plant to the base and waiting a few days signals the tubers to start setting eyes, this makes dividing so much easier

✨It’s ok to start digging before the first frost, dahlias only need around 130 days in the ground to grow new tubers

✨Pre-digging and pre-frost make sure to label your plants!! Very important because once that frost hits you can’t tell one variety from the next

✨Dig around the the clump careful to not sever tubers, but if you do it’s not the end of the world, it happens to the best of us

✨Once the clump is dug gently shake and brush away excess dirt, I also like to wash immediately because I find the that leaving the soil on dries them out faster which is no bueno

✨By all means don’t dig your dahlias if you want to experiment — we did this last year with a few varieties I didn’t super care about and lo and behold they came back on their own like perennials! We just lazily cut them back and threw a hay bale on top for insulation, worked like a charm (zone 6b)

✨If you do dig you just want to get them out before the ground freezes

✨Back brace, knee pads and waterproof clothes are highly recommended

🌿I’ll be sharing tips for dividing clumps and storing them over winter in my next reel, stay tuned!!

Save this video so you can reference back, and share with someone who might need this info!

It’s no secret that photos and photography are extremely important to me. Especially to document these fleeting moments of pregnancy and newborn days, which truly do fly by.

And especially through my losses I’ve learned that no matter the outcome I want the photos to remember these times. I have very few photos of my Liam belly (my son who died during pregnancy) but the ones I do have are some of my very most treasured possessions. And no, I definitely did not feel that way at first. It has taken a lot of time and a lot of therapy and a lot of work. But here I am and I’m unapologetic about how much I love and value photos and documenting this time.

So, friends, just take the photos ✨

Holiday Gifts for the New Mom

November 25, 2018 / Gift Guides, Mom & Baby

The New Mama HolidayShopping for a new mom is always fun! Here are great holiday gifts for the new mom in your life that she is sure to love this year! Gift Guide

Holiday Gifts for the New Mom Ultimate Guide

I had a blast putting together this list of holiday gifts for the new mom! As it is my own first Christmas as a mom I really tried to look for items that I would love and that would be both special and useful. If you’re a mom you know the name of the game is functional, multipurpose but also chic, and that’s exactly what I went for with this guide!

I think any new mom would greatly appreciate the items on this list!

1 // Chewable Charm Silicone Teething Necklace

I have this necklace and wear it frequently, it’s easy to incorporate into any outfit because of the neutral colors and cute design! Plus it keeps Luca occupied while I hold or carry him and he grabs it while he nurses which keeps him semi-focused!

2 // Barefoot Dreams Lite Catalina Long Cardigan

I shared this cardigan a few weeks ago and told you guys how obsessed I was with it for many reasons, but I mainly love the length! It has the coziness of a robe but can also be dressed up or down for an everyday outfit. It comes in different colors options and fits true to size. Barefoot Dreams is the softest material I’ve ever felt and any new mom would be thrilled to receive this as a gift!

3 // Milk Snob Car Seat/Nursing Cover

My nursing cover is hands down one of the most useful new mom items I received. I use it as a car seat cover, shopping cart cover and nursing cover. I love when items are multi-purpose, especially as a new mom because who wants to carry around 57 things for all different tasks!? Plus this brand uses buttery-soft material and has a bunch of different patterns to choose from!

4 // Freshly Picked Diaper Bag

I have been using this diaper bag since day one with Luca and I have to say it’s worth every penny! The quality is gorgeous and the backpack style is both sleek and convenient. Inside has all the pockets you need to organize your baby and mama goodies! Click here for the Nordstrom link!

5// Beauty Counter Cleansing Balm Special Edition

I decided to add some beauty products because what new mom doesn’t enjoy quick skin pick-me-ups? If I’m being honest I don’t remember to do my entire skincare regimen every day but I DO make sure to use this cleansing balm regularly. I can speak to how nourishing it has been to my skin and it’s another multitasker – cleanser, makeup remover, moisturizer. Any new mom would be so appreciative of this gift! If you purchase please name me, Christine Covino as your consultant!

6 // Spanx Faux Leather Leggings

You guys know how much I love these leggings! So I won’t bore you BUT they are amazing, especially postpartum with their high compression/control top (high-waisted as well). The sheen is very subtle, making them perfect for dressing up or down – again, multipurpose, LOVE IT. I recommend sizing up one! They are seriously the bomb. I linked options from all different retailers below.

7 // Milk Maker Tee & Ornament

I think this tee is awesome! And they just came out with a Christmas ornament as well YAS! I live in comfy tees these days and why not get fun mama-themed ones for the new mom?

8 // iRobot Roomba 690 with WiFi

Roomba has been a lifesaver for us! We have a dog that sheds BAD so vacuuming should really be done everyday but who has time for that? Not a new mom that’s for sure. So the gift of cleaning is one of THE BEST things you can give a new mom! If you can’t afford to gift a robotic vacuum like this then maybe offer to come clean one time for her! It would be more appreciated than she could express! All different retailers linked below.

9 // Invisibobble Holiday Duo Pack

These are a great stocking stuffer idea! These hairbands are the only ones that don’t rip my hair out or kink it! I joke about wanting to cut my long hair off because there’s always something – spit up, breastmilk or food in it plus Luca tries to rip it out any chance he can get his sticky hands on it. So yes, any new mom would greatly appreciate this gift!

10 // PS Forty Six Necklace

This necklace has Luca’s birthdate etched in roman numerals and I think it’s so beautiful and special. This shop has all different gorgeous options, personalized jewelry is the way to any moms heart for sure.

11 // Beauty Counter Sugar Scrub

Is it weird to want to EAT a beauty product!? LOL. Literally overtime I open my sugar scrub jar I think about eating a little bit. It’s THAT yummy! But its also super moisturizing with nourishing oils, sometimes when I’m really in a rush I don’t even have to moisturize afterward! Every new mom wants to save time PLUS feel pampered and let me tell you, this product does both. If you purchase please name me, Christine Covino as your consultant!

12 // Josie Maran 5-pc. Argan Smooth & Hydrate Holiday Body Kit

Luxury skincare at an affordable price! One of the things I longed for during those early days of motherhood was a facial. I couldn’t leave Luca for too long so I started doing mini facials at home. It made me feel more human and I really needed that! So this kit definitely has my vote for a new mom gift!

13 // Milk Bliss Lactation Cookies

Lactation cookies are always the way to a new moms heart. Functional AND delicious, plus you can sign her up for a subscription so she never has to think about reordering – the gift that keeps on giving!

14 // KB Pajama Nursing Set

I just got these pajamas a few weeks ago and I have been LIVING in them. I can say they are truly the SOFTEST ever! They also have a convenient panel that just flaps up conveniently for nursing or pumping moms! Again, all about my things being beautiful, good quality and functional! Use code COVINO20 for 20% off your order on the Kindred Bravely website!

Extra Ideas

I had some other quick suggestions if you are in need of more unique ideas! One is to make a gift basket out of a few of these items, it’s always special to receive a beautifully curated and displayed basket of goodies.

A Target or Amazon gift card is always greatly appreciated (anyone else an #amazonmom?). A flower subscription for the lower lover would brighten up any new mama’s day, I’ve been wanting to try out Farm Girl Flowers! I also think an in-home massage or chiropractic service would be amazing! It’s sometimes hard to leave the house but if someone could come to you… game changer!

Another great gift idea for a new mom would be simply to help her with the home – stock the fridge, make a few easily-reheated dinners, clean the house, leave fresh flowers around. Sometimes it’s the simplest gestures that make the biggest impact!

Thank you for reading my post, I hope these ideas holiday gifts for the new mom helps!
