It’s almost dahlia planting season!! Here’s ho It’s almost dahlia planting season!! Here’s how I take cuttings from my most special tubers to increase stock early in the season! Taking cuttings = free plants 🙌

1. About 4-6 weeks before your last frost start “waking up” the tubers you want to take cuttings from by bringing them into a warmer space than what they were being store at. I bring mine in from about 45-50° to 70-75° in order to wake them.

2. Pot up those special tubers vertically leaving the neck and crown part above the soil level. The crown is where the eyes/future stems grow from!

3. Put them under grow lights and keep the room temperature around 70-75°, I don’t water tubers until I see green growth.

4. Wait (and check on them 78726894 times a day if you’re like me) while the eyes turn into stems with leaves and get super excited because it’s time to cut!

5. This should take about 3-4ish weeks under the grow lights, when the stems have 2-3 sets of leaves take a sharp, sterilized knife and cut the stem from the tuber as close as possible to the crown from which its growing from.

6. Remove the bottom set of leaves gently from the stem so you have about two inches bare.

7. Dip in some rooting hormone and pop the stem into a new 4” pot filled with nutrient-rich potting soil. You want to make sure it’s down under the soil surface about 1”. Pat down gently around the base to make sure the cutting is in there securely.

8. Water them in well and put the pots back under the grow lights in a warm area. Check on them daily, once they root they’ll need lots of water!

9. Plant tubers and cuttings outside once all danger of frost has passed. I take about 3-4 cutting per tuber per season and still plant them outside afterwards and STILL get beautiful, lush dahlia plants!

He would have been 3 today 💛 Shared a few inti He would have been 3 today 💛

Shared a few intimate and pure moments in stories to show what it looks like to parent after loss, he’s not here physically but still very much a part of our family. I will say, the capacity for love and compassion our living kids have (at just 2 and 5 years old) really blows me away 🥹 Parenting after loss is a whole whirlwind of confusing, conflicting emotions. Am I doing enough to honor my baby? Am I doing too much? Am I grieving too much and therefore not paying enough attention to my living kids? Is the random mom rage grief or overstimulation or something else?? I’m so proud of the compassion, love and empathy my kids show and I’m sad they know it at such young ages. It’s confusing. It’s unfair. It’s hard. There are no rules, and there’s definitely no baby loss handbook. The days and anniversaries associated with baby loss can be overwhelming and confusing too. Sometimes I feel like keeping it simple and keeping it completely private, other times I feel like publicly honoring our baby. If there’s one thing I’ve learned on this journey it’s that there truly are no rules in grief. You just do what feels right in that given moment. We miss you always baby Liam 💗

That about sums it up! Why I garden, in a nutshell. Gardening has been a passion of mine for many years and became something that I dove even deeper into after experiencing the devastating loss of our baby and the grief journey that has followed. I feel calm and at home and wild and free in the garden, yet planned and poised and in control. In short, gardening changed my life, and saved my life – it has given me profound peace and purpose and there’s nowhere I’d rather be than with my hands in the dirt, head in the sun and heart in nature 🌿

To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow 💐🌿🌷 One of my all time favorite gardening quotes, to plant a garden truly is to have hope for the future. Even looking forward to the tiniest things like watching a seed sprout or waiting for a bud to bloom. It’s the little things, and gardening does that for me, especially when hope and talking about the future can feel hard.

So this your sign to grow all the things this year! I have many blog posts on my site that can help and if you’re local to NY I’m teaching a gardening course later this month, more info on my farm page @wildirisflowertruck 🌿

Holiday Gift Guide For Her: My Wish List

November 19, 2018 / Beauty & Style, Gift Guides

Finding the perfect gift is hard, but it does not have to be! ?Witrh this Holiday Gift Guide For Her you will find just the right gift!

Gift Guide for Her: My Ultimate Wish List

Today’s gift guide just might be my favorite and came highly requested by you all! I bring you my perfect list of swoon-worthy goodies for your holiday wish-list, or the perfect excuse for a pre-holiday treat yo self (or someone else, of course, because ’tis the season).

The older I get the more I look for quality in the items I purchase or ask for as gifts. Some of my picks for this guide are items I own and LOVE and whole-heartedly recommend. Others are things on my personal wish-list that I think makes the ideal holiday ask.

PS- This guide is perfect to forward along to your hubs, boyfriend, or family member asking what you want for Christmas this year!

As usual with my gift guides, every image is clickable and shop-able. Just scroll over, click, and it will take you directly to the goods! I’ve also included a little breakdown of why I included each of the items. Enjoy!!

*SCROLL DOWN TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST TO ENTER A $500 AMAZON GIVEAWAY!*

1. J. Crew Chateau Parka in Heather Dusk

This coat is definitely an investment, but that is why I would ask for it as a gift! I love the length and structure of it, the A-line frame and wool texture make it so you can dress it up or down! Plus who doesn’t love a beautiful faux fur hood!? (J. Crew $365 – but will go on sale!)

2. Bauble Bar Vina Drop Earrings

I LOVE receiving jewelry as a gift, there’s something so special about it! And these earrings I just think are so beautiful – anything raw/druzy-looking gets me every time!! (Nordstrom, $36)

3. Kyi Kyi Cable Knit Beanie

This pom pom beanie is adorable – the bigger the pom the better!! Its super high quality and real fox fur. Any hat-lover would be thrilled to receive this one as a gift! (Nordstrom, $85)

4. Petrified Wood Serving Board

Ok, this gift is SO ME. If you know me you know I have a love for rocks, petrified wood included. So a petrified wood serving board is right up my alley (and would match my petrified wood coaster set!!). Even though it’s a bit different I think anyone can appreciate it’s beauty and simplicity. This would be a great hostess gift as well! (Terrain, $88)

5. Beauty Bio GloPRO Microneedling Facial Regeneration Tool

I did micro needling at a media-spa a couple years back and LOVED IT. Seriously. It changed my skin so drastically for the better and I SWEAR by it! Technology has come a long way since then and, as I still think having the procedure medically done is best, I can’t help but want the convenience of being able to do it in the comfort of my own home! This one is the best on the market and would make the perfect gift for any skincare lover! (Nordstrom, $249)

Finding the perfect gift is hard, but it does not have to be! ?Witrh this Holiday Gift Guide For Her you will find just the right gift!

6. Floret Farmer-Florist Toolbelt

Again, this gift guide is called ‘my wish list’ so of course, something farmy/flower-related would be on here! I own this tool belt and let me tell you – it is a must-have for any gardener. A pruners holster and extra pockets right on the hip makes a world of difference when out in the garden tending to your plants. Plus it’s made by my friend Erin at Floret Flower Farm and she’s the best! You can choose right-handed or left-handed (so convenient!), I highly recommend this as a gift for the garden lover in your life! (Floret flowers.com, $175)

7. Barefoot Dreams Pajama Set

You can just imagine how buttery soft and cozy these PJs are by Barefoot Dreams! Pajamas (luxury pajamas) are always a great gift idea, bonus – these would be great for nursing moms! They fit TTS, come in a bunch of colors and are super comfortable to sleep in as well! (QVC, $130)

8. Rebecca Minkoff Washed Nylon Tote in Vintage Pink

This tote is the perfect size for your everyday pocketbook or I’ve even used it as my extra carry-on while traveling. Throw one of those tote-savvy organizers in it and it could also be a diaper bag! I love the versatility, plus its CUTE and the fabric is super different. Comes in a bunch of colors! (Nordstrom, $145)

9. BP Leopard Scarf

Anyone else obsessed with the leopard trend?? Well, I’m guilty over here! I am loving leopard print accessories this season and if you are too this scarf is a winner. Scarves are a great, classic gift idea! (Nordstrom, $19)

10. Adirondack III Waterproof Ugg Boot

Obsessed with these boots. They’re both functional and beautiful, plus they’re great quality so you know you’ll get a few years out of them. I love this style because you could dress them up or down – picture them with faux leather leggings and a dressier cardigan or your basic joggers and casual parka. Seriously love them and they are definitely part of my wish list this year! (Nordstrom, $249)

11. Barefoot Dreams Throw

I’ve had my eye on this throw for quite some time! I have a blanket that looks similar with same the soft leopard print (there it is again!). But really nothing compares to the softness of that signature Barefoot Dreams material! This would make a great gift for any woman but I guarantee your mother or MIL would REALLY love it!! (QVC, $180)

12. Dakota Water Resistant Ugg Slipper

Warm and cozy slippers are a must on any gift guide wish list! These moccasin-style Uggs fit the bill and they also have a rubber sole for indoor and light outdoor use. The reviews say they fit TTS and with 3.1k of them, they still have 5 stars!! Definitely part of my wish list this year, plus they come in a bunch of colors! (Nordstrom, $100)

13. Victor & Rolf Flower Bomb Perfume Set

This is my tried and true perfume, the fragrance is HEAVENLY and the beautiful packaging looks gorgeous sitting on my bathroom counter. I love this perfume because of it’s understated floral and fresh scent – notes of bergamot, jasmine, mandarin and vanilla are the most recognizable in the seductive and ultra-feminine bouquet. This 4pc. gift set is gorgeous and you would get many months of use out of it! (Nordstrom, $168)

14. Kate Spade Eliza Leather Wallet

As a new mom, I’ve come to appreciate the simple, convenient and functional. That is everything this wallet is plus some chic on the side! The wrist strap is super convenient and there’s plenty of room inside for all your goodies. I am due for a new wallet and this is the one I would go for! (Nordstrom, $110)

15. Fresh Sugar Wanderlust Lip Set

Give me all the lip balms! I have a thing with chapsticks, balms, lip scrubs, basically anything hydrating for my lips. Fresh has become a brand I truly love, I use their lip balms everyday. They have clear, everyday styles, as well as tinted balms and they all, are nourishing and protecting. This gift set is super cute plus gives you the whole variety! (Nordstrom, $53)
