If you are looking for my Complete Guide to Seed Starting blog post click HERE, I go over all the nitty gritty and include my methods and all my tips. I’m a forever converted soil blocker and I’m working on a post with more info about that, but in the mean time check out my seed starting guide!

DIY Seed Starter Soil Mix Recipe for Soil Blocking:

I will link my soil blocking guide here as soon as it’s finished! In the mean time, here is the soil recipe so you can grab the supplies needed and get started. There are also great tutorials on YouTube if you want to learn more about soil blocking in the mean time!

  • 2 parts Seed Starter Soil (Jiffy is the brand I use). Seed starter soil is light and fluffy, perfect for delicate seeds and brand new root systems. It’s very different than regular potting soil!
  • 1 part Pitt Moss (NOT peat moss, using peat moss in the garden is no bueno for their natural ecosystems)
  • 1/2 part Greensand
  • 1 scoop Mycorrhizae

Think of it like mixing cake batter! Thoroughly mix your dry ingredients first and slowly add the water in afterwards to bind. I usually make one big dry mix and then smaller wet batches as needed. I mix the wet batches as I go and only use as much soil as I need for the estimated number of blocks. I’ve also learned that it helps a lot to use warm water and let it sit for a few hours so that the pitt moss soaks up some moisture. The ratio I use is two parts soil mix to one part water.
